This ride, as with most all of my rides, headed south out of the park on state Highway 9. It started off with my first clear view of the Eagle Crags just out side of Spring Dale. I was constantly reminded of the wind every time I looked up and even pedaling down hill was a struggle. As I crested the hills on my way to Grafton I didn’t feel the usual rush of spin that my fixed Surly usually gives, just the need to churn and grind harder to over come the wall that I just hit.
The Exit to Grafton form Hwy9 is the first left in Rockville, Bridge road.
After hitting a dirt road, the first signs of Grafton will be the Grafton Cemetery. I had NO problems riding 16-20 mph along these roads on the Surly Cross-X but if I come back I will put on wider tires [35 to 40mm and not the 23 mm and 25mm that I had on for this ride]. Big bumps/rocks jolted the hell out of me when I didn’t miss them but I felt I had the stability that it took to avoid any seen obstacle, even on the washboards.

Some might recognize this little town from the Movie ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’ (1969). The Film was shot in a variety of places [Durango and Silverton, Colorado, St. George and Grafton, Utah, with Cuernavaca and Taxco, Mexico, standing in for South America]. If you remember seeing the movie, you might recognize the church in the background of of the shot of my Cross-Check and the Grafton Town Hall porch. I finished the journey into the night with out the aid of an expected tailwind. Oh, Well! I can’t say that it wasn’t fun but not getting one’s way can be an unexpected surprise. It was a great ride and one that I will probably re-peat, regardless of the wind or lack of, in the upcoming months as the Bridge Rd out of Rockville and towards Grafton splits giving access to Gooseberry Mesa and new surprises!
All the best,
Ike
